Google announced that it is hiring multiple positions for its mysterious auto-driving car project, including material project managers. According to automotive experts, composite materials may be incorporated into the design. “Obviously, they are planning to expand,†said Mark Stevens, a former GM plant manager and now a project manager at the Automotive Research Center. “But they plan to stick with plastics, polymers or some kind of composite material.†Stevens believes this may be good news for composites manufacturers and points out that the requirement for “accuracy and asset utilization†expertise in job advertisements means that the project is aimed at lower volume production cars. “Composites are usually not used in high-volume vehicles,†Stevens said. The job advertisement says that the purpose of the autonomous car program is to improve people's lives by changing mobility to make driving easier and safer regardless of their driving ability. As of now, Google’s self-driving cars have traveled more than a million miles. By observing other recent recruitment positions in a Google department, self-driving cars don't seem to be the only project looking for composite materials. Google recently announced job advertisements for its four "Makani" projects, a new type of wind turbine that uses less material to get stronger, more stable winds at higher altitudes, resulting in more energy. .
